Welcome to the memorial page for

Elizabeth McVey Hunter

January 21, 2016

Elizabeth McVey Hunter, known far and wide as “Lib”, died on January 21, 2016 just a week after her 93rd birthday.  She was the wife of Ernest “Snaps” Hunter, long time resident of Hampton Township and formerly of Macon, Mississippi.

The daughter of Jim and Mattie McVey of Quitman County, Mississippi and Gibson County, Tennessee, Lib earned a BA in English at Mississippi State College for Women and later taught high school English before marrying.

Lib and Snaps first lived in Birmingham, Alabama, then moved to Atlanta, Georgia and finally to Hampton Township, Pennsylvania.  After Snaps’ death in 2007, she moved to Walnut Creek, California to be close to her daughter.  Lib and Snaps had two children, Beth and Jim, three grandchildren, Amy, Bradley and Randy and three great grandchildren, Jade, Lucy and Alton.  Lib was a marvelous mother and a wonderful example to all who knew her and she leaves three generations to carry her loving lessons forward.

Lib was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and tirelessly served her community in many areas.  She was a docent for 40 years at the Depreciation Lands Museum where she was involved in fundraising, program development and many of the museum’s building projects.  Lib co-authored the book Historic Hampton, a history of the early settlement and the development of Hampton Township.  In addition, she trained Girl Scout leaders, delivered Meals on Wheels and was the recipient of Hampton Township’s “Heart of Hampton Award.”

A small graveside service for family and close friends will be held at the Allegheny Memorial Cemetery on Duncan Rd. at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 29.  Afterward, a “Celebration of Lib’s Life” will be held in the new Tavern at the Depreciation Lands Museum from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM.  The museum is at 4743 Pioneer Rd. in Allison Park, just off Rt. 8 and just behind Citizen’s Bank.

The Celebration will include a selection of light finger food and a flood of memories.  No black clothing!  Wear something casual, colorful, and happy.  And bring all of your best “Lib” stories.  Anyone who knew and loved Lib is invited.  Please come.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Depreciation Lands Museum – http://www.depreciationlandsmuseum.org/index.shtml
