John "Jack" Keith Maitland

John “Jack” Keith Maitland, died Wednesday, September 6, at Passavant Hospice. He was born November 22, 1931 in Hershey, Pennsylvania to John Muir and Beulah Keith Maitland. Jack obtained a history degree from Princeton University. After graduation, Jack worked for one year in the family’s poultry business outside Hershey. He then served for two years in the US Army as an intelligence specialist. After working one more year in the family business, he and his mother decided to exit farming and he entered the trainee program at Mellon Bank.

Jack worked as a Vice President in the Trust Department at Mellon Bank until his retirement in the late 1980s. He then worked for the Mellon Family Office for several years until his retirement.

Jack enjoyed traveling and began taking trips throughout the world in the 1960s. In later years, he and his partner Jim Thompson, traveled to places such as Machu Picchu, New Zealand, Greece, Turkey and the Baltic countries. He also enjoyed gardening at his residence in Allison Park and he volunteered at the Audubon Society. He was a subscriber for many years to the Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Public Theater and Pittsburgh Symphony Pops.

He is survived by his partner of 16 years, Jim Thompson, and several cousins. There will be a private graveside service in Hershey and a public memorial service and Celebration of Life at a time to be determined.
