Wife of the late Dean C. Backeris.  

Mother of Van (Karen), Alvin (Tammy), and Dean (Patricia) Backeris.  

Grandmother of Dean, Mark, Peter, Thomas, Alex, and Patrick.  

Great grandmother of Evangelos, Maximos, Austin Stephanos and her namesake, Marika.  

Sister of the late Pete, Bill (surviving wife Beatrice), Nick, Gus Andromalos, and Chrysoula Scott.  

Born in Lemnos, Greece, Marie moved to Pittsburgh (Lawrenceville) as a child.  Marie was an industrious woman.  While in her early 20's she managed several movie theaters in Pittsburgh including the Stanley Theater.  Along with her husband, she raised three sons while owning and operating a wholesale confectionery business based in Lawrenceville.  As an active participant in the Greek Orthodox Church, she took pride in being a member of Philoptochos and the Choir.  Marie was well known for standing for hours on end over a hot fryer twirling thin layers of dough that would become a Holy Trinity Food Festival favorite known as Diples (theepless).  Marie was a superb cook and loved to be surrounded by her family.  She took great joy in feeding, loving, and caring, but especially feeding, her six grandchildren.  In her later years, she got to enjoy the fruits of her long, full life by witnessing, knowing, and loving her four great grandchildren. She will be missed by all those her life touched.  

Visitation Sunday 1:00-6:00 p.m. with the Trisagion Service at 5 p.m. at Neely Funeral Home, 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw.  

Visitation Monday 10:00 a.m. Funeral Service 10:30 a.m. Luncheon 12:00 p.m. all taking place at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church 985 Providence Blvd. Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
