Eleanor Hayes Obituary

Eleanor A. Hayes was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and friend. She left this world on March 6th at age 84.

She was born the youngest of four to James and Elizabeth Scannell and was the last surviving member of her siblings. Preceding her was James Scannell Jr. (Dot), Raymond Scannell (Midge) and Marion Heyl (Abe). Eleanor attended high school at St. Benedict’s Academy and continued to Duquesne University where she graduated with a nursing degree. Post-graduation she joined the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA), before taking time off to raise her children and work as a school nurse at Shaler School District. She eventually returned to the VNA where she retired from a nursing career she loved.

Eleanor met the love of her life, Ed, at the Catholic bowling league. He swept her off her feet and she never looked back. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They had a love and respect for each other that you could feel in their presence. Together they raised five children, Mary Pat Shanahan (Tom), Karen Lala (Charlie), Eddie Hayes (Michelle), Janet Kress (John), Joanne Rooney (Bryan) and doted on twelve grandchildren, Dylan, Ryan, and Haley Shanahan, Nick, Devon, and CJ Lala, Sophia Hayes, Zachary, Abigail and Madelyn Kress, Hayes and Nolan Rooney.

Eleanor was a special woman and there will forever be a hole in the hearts of those she touched. She was modest and humble, never judgmental or unforgiving. She showed us the importance of enjoying the moment, creating experiences, and honoring family and friends. She loved spending time going to brunch with her girlfriends or enjoying lively evenings with her family. She had the gift of gab and could talk your ear off on the phone for hours.  She was crafty and always enjoyed a good project especially if it was for one of her grandchildren. She and Ed shared a passion for travel, cruises, and always found themselves by water.  She was a devout Catholic and was honored to serve as the secretary of the St. Catherine St. Vincent de Paul for many years.

Visitation is scheduled Thursday March 11th at 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Neely Funeral Home 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw.
