Age 89, of Allison Park, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016 at his residence with his wife at his side.
He was born Jan. 8, 1927, in Griffin, GA, the son of Hartford Thomas Green and Isabel (Parkins) Green.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patricia (Brandenburger) Green and his daughter Sarah Elizabeth Green of Wellesley, MA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Mary Frances Travers and Isabel Cannon.
Survivors include his 7 nieces and 3 nephews.
Franklin attended Griffin High School, where he played football and ran track, and upon graduating joined the Navy during World War II, serving on the heavy cruiser U. S. S. Augusta in the North Atlantic.
After an honorable discharge in 1946, he entered Clemson University on a football scholarship, earning a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1950.
Franklins long and accomplished career began with Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp, on the start-up staff of Owens-Cornings S.C., plant (the first direct melt, continuous strand fiberglass plant in the world).
In 1952, he joined the newly formed Fiber Glass Division of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. (PPG), in Shelbyville, IN, as resident engineer and later Production Supervisor for new plant construction / start-up.
Named Superintendent at the Shelby, NC plant, he was instrumental in the plant design and start-up in 1959.
In 1960, Franklin became Chief Process Engineer for the Fiber Glass Division and was part of the design team for a new plant in The Netherlands. Returning to Shelbyville, IN, in 1961 as Plant Manager.
Franklin became Production Manager of the Fiber Glass Division of PPG in 1966, Vice President of Manufacturing of the Division in 1968, and Vice President of Fiber Glass Reinforcement Products in 1980. In 1983, he was elected Vice President and General Manager of the Fiber Glass Division and named Vice President of Fiber Glass Products in 1984.
He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the PPG Fiber Glass Corporations joint venture in Chia Yi, Taiwan, with new plant start up in 1991; Chairman of the Board of Directors of a subsidiary in Wigan, England, with plant expansion completed in 1991; Chairman of the Board of Directors of a Netherlands joint venture when PPG bought out its partner in 1990; and a member of the Board of Directors of a joint venture in Barcelona, Venezuela.
During his career with PPG Industries, Franklin registered three fiber glass process patents, served on the Presidents Council as a member of the American Institute of Management, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Ceramic Society, and the Society of Automotive Engineers. He served as a member of PPGs Chief Executive Committee from 1968 - 1971; the Presidents Committee in 1983 - 1984, and the Chairmans Council from 1988 through 1991 and was elected a Life Member to the PPG Collegium in 1990.
In his 1988 book, The Breakthrough Strategy, Dr. Robert H. Schaffer devotes a chapter to the restructuring of the sales and marketing unit of Fiber Glass Products at PPG, initiated and accomplished through the leadership strategies of Mr. Green. And Glass Industry sited Through Mr. Greens insight of the necessity of change, coupled with his innovative marketing strategies, PPG Industries successfully and rapidly moved into new and international marketplaces.
On October 16, 1992, Mr. Green was honored as Glass Man of the Year, the Industrys highest honor. Mr. Green was the 22nd recipient of the prestigious Phoenix Award and the first to achieve this recognition for PPG Industries. Phoenix Award Chairman, James Ulmer, commented, The Phoenix Committees selection of Frank Green recognizes an individual whose contributions in the technical and commercial development of fiberglass has significantly shaped the fiberglass market worldwide.
He was a member of the Duquesne Club, the Rolling Rock Club, the Hammock Dunes Club and Wildwood Golf Club. And served on the Board of Trustees for LaRoche College and Board of Directors of Junior Achievement in Pittsburgh.
Franklin was a true gentleman, accomplished businessman, mentor and completely dedicated to his family and friends.
He loved working in his yard, walking his dogs, sailing and football.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
