George William Rooney, Jr., passed away Monday, October 4, 2021 at the age of 86. A graduate of Peabody High School, George attended the Wharton School of Business and the University of Pittsburgh before serving as a second lieutenant in the quartermaster corps. After his honorable discharge, he entered a career in sales at USSteel which eventually led to positions with several small businesses. In the second half of his career, he became an expert in major capital fundraising campaigns for nonprofits, eventually rising to the position of Vice President at Ketchum, Inc. After his “retirement,” he continued to run campaigns for the United Methodist Foundation and even obtained a real estate license. He served on the Board of Directors of The Pittsburgh CLO and Pittsburgh Public Theater. Was an Elder and served on the Session at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church for a number of years. An avid golfer and reader, George was an informed and educated sports fan, quick with a cogent history lesson about a wide range of athletic events. George was a loving, attentive husband, father, and grandfather; he is survived by Sally, his wife of 65 years, his children Gregg (Ruth), Wynne, and Todd (Andrea), and his grandchildren Lucas (Alexandra), Elias, Violet (Matthew), Jack, Emma, and Maggie. Visitation Thursday 2-4 and 6-8 PM Neely Funeral Home, 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw. Funeral Service Friday at 11 AM at the Funeral Home.
