James Smillie Thompson, M.D.

Age 88, of Gibsonia, on September 29, 2017. Husband of 56 years to Donna Rea; father of James (Amy); Rebecca Winek (Michael); David (Sandra); Rachel (Joe) Muczinski. Lovingly referred to as Old Daddy by his grandchildren, Lindsey, Max, Nathan, Hannah, Haley, Elliot, Audrey, Lilly and Nolan and great grandchildren Jackson and Owen. Dr. Jim was raised on a farm in Shaler and graduated from Shaler High School in 1946. He earned a B.S. degree in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1954 and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1959. His first job as a physician was with Richland Medical Center. He went on to open his own practice as a family practitioner in Shaler in 1964 while simultaneously working in the emergency room at North Hills Passavant Hospital. He practiced medicine for 56 years, mainly in his private office and with his black bag making house calls. His love was for his Lord, his family, his practice and his patients.

Visitation will be on Sunday, October 1, 2017 from 1-4 PM and 6-8 PM, and on Monday, October 2, 2017 from 6-8 PM at Neely Funeral Home, 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA.

A memorial service will be on Tuesday October 3, at 7:30 PM at Elfinwild Presbyterian Church, 3200 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, 116 Browns Hill Road, Suite 100, Valencia, PA 16059, and/or Elfinwild Presbyterian Church, 3200 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA, 15116.
