John Mills Obituary

John Kenneth Mills, age 56, of Hampton Township passed away on July 19, 2020. 

He is the loving husband of Susan Baida and devoted father of Avery, Cameron and Julian Mills.He is the son of the late Kenneth and Elizabeth Mills. He is also survived by sisters Polly Mills Whitehorn and Penny Mills (Peter Simpson), and his nephews Jayson and Douglas Whitehorn and Jesse and Jacob Simpson.

John was the Associate Vice President of Product Development for UPMC Health Plan in Pittsburgh, where he had worked since 2011. His long career in health care policy included work for Emblem Health in New York and on Capitol Hill as legislative director for Rep. Elliot Engel (D-NY), including work on health care reform. He also co-founded eCareDiary, an online service for family caregivers, based on his experience caring for his father during his battle with Parkinson’s. John received his bachelors degree from Union College in Schenectady, NY and a masters degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

John was passionate about local politics. He ran for the Hampton Township Council in 2019, and served as a Hampton Township District Democratic Leader since 2016. Prior to moving to Pittsburgh, John was a former president of the Lexington Democratic Club in New York City and served as an elected district leader in Midtown Manhattan. He met his wife Susan when they both served on Manhattan Community Board 5.

He was a member of Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church. He coached his sons’ T-ball and basketball teams and took all three of his children to Mets games, given his lifelong fandom of the team.
