Joseph Samuel Azar, DDS, (age 92) formerly of Glenshaw, died at Sunrise of McCandless on Friday, July 16, 2021. He was born in Altoona to the late Cablan Joseph Azar and Julia (Matry) Azar. Surviving are his former wife Ruth Kline of Brevard NC, and his three children; David Azar of Austin TX, Susan Azar (husband Victor Zona) of Brevard NC, and daughter Lauren Azar (wife Rebecca Ryan) of Madison WI. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister Helen, and a brother Cablan “Turk” Azar of Altoona. Academically, Joe was a 1946 graduate of Altoona High School, and in 1949 a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1956, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Doctorate of Dentistry Science and later returned to earn a post graduate degree in Orthodontics. During his career Joe taught Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Following Dental School he joined the Army in Fort Eustis,VA serving as a Captain in the U.S Army as a dentist. Upon returning from the service he began his post graduate studies and eventually opened a private practice specializing in orthodontics serving the North Hills for over 35 years.Family and friends will be received at Neely Funeral Home, 2208 Mt Royal Blvd, Glenshaw on Saturday, July 31st from 9-11:00 A.M. Interment will be at 2:30 P.M., Lot #298 in Woodland 3 of Grandview Cemetery in Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made one of the following charities: North Hills Community Outreach Endowment of the Pittsburgh Foundation, The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind Children or The Endowment Fund of Clelian Heights.
