Joseph Kobus Obituary

Joseph John Kobus, age 88, of Shaler Twp. on Sept. 19, 2020.

Husband of the late Winifred (Strong) Kobus.

Father of Kathy (James) Poole, Jodi (Arlen) Singer, Mary (Douglas) Smith and the late Bonnie Giel (surviving husband Gary).

Brother of the late Marcella Barber, Dorothy Strusienski, Thomas Kobus, and Margaret DeLuca.

Proudly called PapPap by James and Kelsey Poole, Mary Chase, Allie and Joseph Giel, and Laura and Megan Smith.

Devoted to his family, community, and country, Joe was one of the truest examples of the unsung hero we should all strive to be.  Raised in Etna, after graduating from Etna High School Joe worked in the steel industry before enlisting in the Army and serving overseas during the Korean War where he reached the level of Corporal. After returning to the states he met his soulmate Winnie, married, and had four daughters. His main occupation was as a draftsman, but in the 1980’s he and Winnie bought and ran Maggie’s Pub in Millvale. In addition to supporting and raising his family, Joe volunteered in numerous ways. He was a volunteer fireman, coached girls softball, helped with the handicap swim program at Kiwanis Park, and helped at the Bread of Life food pantry, just to name a few. He was active and served as a board member at the American Legion Post 785, VFW Post 9199, and Kiwanis Club of Glenshaw. He lived by his advice to his family of “get involved”. He was a true inspiration.
