Mary Pepmeyer Obituary

Pepmeyer (Roos), Mary Elizabeth

Age 93, of Shaler, on Monday, May 15, 2023. Born on November 18, 1929 and raised on Florence Ave. in Bellevue, she was the daughter of the late Edmund Nicholas and Flora (Vogel) Roos, and devoted wife of the late William E. Pepmeyer Sr., whom she married on August 1, 1953. Mary and Bill had met the previous October, shortly after he had returned from the Korean War. Mary was the proud and beloved mother of four sons: Billy (Karen Bernard), Eric, Steve (Michele Bacasa) and John (Tracey Sartoris). She loved her grandchildren. One small way Grandmother (her preferred nomenclature) showed this was by enclosing a crisp $2 bill in their birthday cards. Her grandchildren are Rachel Greene, Nathan (Roxanne Parillo), Rachel (John-Michael) Pauze’, Joel, Noah, Isaac, Seth, Aaron, Shelby and Nik. Mary also has 3 greats: Oliver Anthony Pepmeyer, and the Pauze’ brothers, Levi Mark and Victor Stephen.

Mary was the last of a grand and distinguished generation. She was preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses: Edmund (Lou Franz), Norman (Marilou Holdcroft), Paul, Alan (Marge Rupert), Anne (Jess Wagner) and Lewis (Dorothy Allman). A woman of prayer, Mary interceded for the families of her nieces and nephews: Eddie (deceased), Brian, Diane Geheber, Debbie Bennett, Norman Jr., Donald, David (deceased), Ellen Swarts, Amy, Alan, Andy (deceased), John, Sue Tracey, Don Glaser, Gary Glaser, Laurie Ebitz (who phoned Aunt Mary regularly to talk and catch up) and Curtis.

Raised in the faith of her parents, she practiced her Catholicism all her life. A 1947 high school graduate of Mt. Assisi Academy, an all girls school, Mary’s class had 66 students. One year, Mary was the May Queen. She also played on the basketball team. (In those days, each team had 10 players on the court at all times, 5 on offense and 5 on defense.) Most of her adult life was spent on Hartle Rd., where her young family moved in 1965. They joined St. Bonaventure Church and Mary was involved in different ministries over the years, including Christian Mothers, the Bereavement Ministry, and Meals on Wheels. Mary liked to be at the beach (lots of sun), and for a stretch of years was able to annually go to Corolla, NC, owing to the generosity of her godson and his family. She always enjoyed working out in her yard (more sun) and did so every summer up until this past year. Her lifelong neighbor, Marla Francis, was always just across the street. Widowed in 1984, Mary held several jobs after her boys were raised. She worked at Don Royal Cleaners, Marian Hall at Mt. Assisi, and Elmcroft Personal Care Home. Mary laughed easily and thought and spoke well of others. She lived a life of Christian service and grace and will be joyfully remembered!
