Maxine (McCloskey) Berneburg, 96, of Lima, passed away on September 21, 2023, at 10:10am at St. Ritas Medical Center. She was born on December 12, 1926, in Pittsburgh, PA., to John W. and Marion A. (McDavitt) McCloskey. Both parents have preceded her in death. On November 24, 1949, she married Norbert “Bernie” E. Berneburg, and he passed away on December 25, 2009. They were sweethearts, and were a great example to their children and those who knew them.
Maxine was a homemaker and was a parishioner of St Charles Catholic Church in Lima. She volunteered at St. Ritas Medical Center as well as St. Agnes Hospital when she lived in Maryland. She was an avid golfer and a former member of Rolling Road Golf Club in Maryland, where she was a member of a 9-hole group.
Maxine and Bernie opened their home to out-of-town friends, as well as holding many family reunions, where Maxine made everyone feel welcome. After purchasing a vacation home in Hidden Valley, Pa, it also became a gathering place where a lot of singing and laughing took place. Following Bernie’s retirement, they enjoyed extensive traveling throughout the world. Eventually after Bernie’s death, Maxine moved back to Lima to be near her daughter, Diane
She is survived by her daughter; Diane (Robert) Maloney, of Lima, Ohio; grandchildren: Heather O’Connor of Naperville, Illinois and Stephanie (Gary) Davis of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; great-grandchildren: Garrett Davis, Lauren Davis, Addison Davis, Grayson Davis, Alexus Laird and Ryan O’Connor; great-great-granddaughter Charlotte and her sister, Margaret Reiter, of Pittsburgh. Helen was preceded in death by a son; Douglas N. Berneburg and siblings Delores Creighan, Patricia Giganti, Joanne Morgan, Eileen Quinn, and Joseph McCloskey.
Friends and family will be received on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 from 5:00-8:00PM at the Neely Funeral Home, 2208 Mt., Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA 15116. Maxine’s Funeral Mass will be held at St. Matthew Parish, St. Bonaventure Church, 2001 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA 15116., on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 10:00 AM.
