Richard Scott Obituary

Richard Sumney Scott, a beloved member of the Pittsburgh community, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the age of 82.  He resided in Glenshaw, PA, and touched the lives of many with his kindness, warmth, keen advice, and dedication to service.

Richard, affectionately known as Dick, was born on January 18, 1942, in Pittsburgh, PA to Samuel and Virginia (DuBarry) Scott.  He graduated cum laude from Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, cum laude from Princeton University, and earned his J.D. at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law before serving as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy.

As a respected attorney, Dick's integrity, unwavering commitment to his clients and community, and compassionate approach earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike.

Dick served on various non-profit boards and committees over his lifetime, ACHIEVA (formerly ARC-Allegheny) in particular.  He was well known in the community for his estate planning work for people with disabilities and their families and played a leading role in creating The Family Trust, a non-profit organization that provides estate planning and fiduciary services to families of people with disabilities.

Richard is survived by his older son Matthew Sumney Scott, his younger son Joshua Trexler Scott, Josh's wife Kathryn, and his three beloved grandchildren Eleanor, Edith, and Nathan. He is also survived by brothers Samuel DuBarry “Barry” Scott and his wife, Celinda, Frederick William Scott and his wife, Thelma, and his many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, and grand-nieces, whom he loved dearly.  Finally, he is survived by his closest cherished friends, including Gary Fleming, Linda Anthony, and Gerry Baltzer to name only a few from a list too long to include. May his soul rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

Richard enjoyed spending time with friends and family and taking care of his home and his cat, Monty.  He enjoyed sailing with friends Porter Kier and Bill Beard and brother Barry. He enjoyed being outdoors, long walks, even longer nights of ping pong, skiing, biking, kayaking, and playing his 12-string guitar by the fire.

Viewing will be held at Neely Funeral Home, 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA on Thursday, Feb. 22 from 2-4 pm as well as 6-8 pm. A private gathering will be arranged by the family at a later date.
