Richard "Duke" Kapres

Richard “Duke” Kapres, age 87, a longtime resident of Shaler Township and formerly of Pittsburgh’s Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 10, 2026. 

Beloved husband of the late Carol A. Kapres; loving father of Rick Kapres (Tracy) and Kristy Kapres Schraegle (Adam); grandfather of Carlie (Kapres) Brummer, Alex Kapres (Jennifer), and Gavin and Sienna Schraegle; great-grandfather of Baker Brummer; and brother of Kathleen Kapres and the late Donald C. Kapres. 

Duke came from humble beginnings. As the proud son of a Lithuanian immigrant father, he left school at a young age to help support his family, working in a gypsum mill and setting duck pins at a local bowling alley. In 1960, he married the love of his life, Carol (Filkowski), and they built their life in Shaler Township while raising their two children. 

Duke found his true calling in 1962 when he began his career as a car salesman at Don Allen Chevrolet on Baum Boulevard. He often proudly shared that he sold exactly 7,892 cars before retiring in 1995 at the age of 57. 

Duke LOVED many things, especially golf. A longtime member of River Forest Country Club and the “Grasshoppers,” he spent years trying to perfect his swing and the swing of those around him. He was an avid sports fan and sports gambler who spent countless hours watching the Pirates and Steelers while calculating point spreads for nearly every NFL game on television. He loved bright colors, loud music, and a good party. 

Most of all, Duke loved his family and friends. He genuinely enjoyed helping people, offering advice, making connections, and bringing energy and laughter wherever he went. He was known for writing long emails and letters to family and friends—usually packed with strong opinions and plenty of personality. 

After the heartbreaking loss of his beloved Carol in 2019, Duke found happiness again at Ridgecrest Senior Living in McCandless. There, he quickly became a larger-than-life presence, organizing Super Bowl pools, Kentucky Derby and March Madness parties, poker clubs, and sing-along happy hours. 

A man of incredible energy with a smile that could light up a room, Duke was truly unforgettable—one of a kind and deeply loved. Those who knew him were lucky to have had him in their lives. And if he could speak to everyone one last time, in true Duke fashion, he would say: 

“THANKS a $1,000,000!!!! I’ll see you when I see you.” 

Visitation Monday May 18th from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Neely Funeral Home, 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw. 

Funeral Mass Tuesday the 19th at 10 AM at St. Matthew Parish, St. Bonaventure Church. Everyone Please Meet At Church.
