I was so sure I would get there tonight, but I am sick and even missed work today. I'm so sorry not be be a presence for you and I am wholly sorry for your loss. I hope you will take care of yourselves through all of this and that you will feel peace.

On a Warm Summer Evening,
Behind a tiny green house
with a large deck,
and an even larger backyard,
There sat a quiet, happy family
who were playing cards and sharing laughs.
Love and the smell of fresh coffee filled the air.
You sat there hands folded over
with a contented grin on your face.
A grin that I had learned
meant your hearing aid was turned off ages ago.
You were just happy to have the company.
Over the years, you taught me so much
from throwing darts
to the simplest card games,
to lessons about driving,
like how it is ok to take my time
to slow down,
and watch buildings go by.
Every so often, you would point one out
telling the story of what the building meant to you.
it was nice hearing you tell pieces of your life story.
Even though I was too young to remember
some of the stories told.
It always stuck with me that
you lived a good life.
A life spent with the woman you love,
and with a family who will always love you.
One of the best things you taught me
is that sometimes
it takes courage to do nothing.
I always thought you were invincible.
I still think you are,
and for most of my life,
thanks to that one picture,
I thought you were Indiana Jones too.

Rich, what a beautiful remembrance of your father. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time of loss.
